Misleading as its name may be, Flvto YouTube Downloader is far from being yet another YouTube video grabbing tool. This free utility not only combines video downloading with audio extraction, allowing you to grab your preferred streams in various video and audio formats, but it also allows you to perform the same operations on its website. Besides, YouTube is not the only video sharing site supported – actually, the program can grab files hosted in many other popular video sites.
According to its web page, the app can download videos from “any websites”, though the program’s interface shows only five as possible candidates – YouTube, SoundCloud, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and Instagram, which is somehow misleading, too. Probably “any websites” is a bit too optimistic on their side, but apparently, it does support more video hosts than those mentioned. It works better with some sites than with others, though. Thus, I didn’t manage to download any video from YouTube, let alone extract any audio stream from any of the videos hosted there. SoundCloud worked like a charm, just like Vimeo, though it struggled a bit with 4K videos. As for the list of audio formats, it is somehow limited, including MP3 and WMA for the audio streams, and MP4, AVI, FLV, MOV, and WMV for the videos, including HD AVI and HD MP4. The only video download I tried in MP4 resulted in an audio-only media file, though. None of the output formats allow for user customization, and you will find no information about the settings to be used in each conversion process. You don’t know the original formats in which the video is available, either, which makes the entire download/conversion process a bit of a touch-and-go experience.
The interface itself is quite attractive, though not very informative. You don’t get much information about the videos being downloaded apart from the title of the video file – neither a thumbnail of the video file nor information about its length or the website where it comes from is provided (except if it belongs to any of the five sites mentioned above – then it is temporarily stored in its corresponding “In progress” folder).
As a user, it is always great to have such a wide variety of free YouTube downloaders and converters to choose from. Thankful as I may be for that, in order to pick Flvto YouTube Downloader against some of the many similar free tools available, this tool should make an effort to provide the user with more information, more flexible and transparent download settings, and a higher level of reliability when it comes to grabbing videos from certain sites.
